Flood schemes in Devon and Cornwall will receive approximately £33 million in government funding, as confirmed by the Environment Agency (EA). This significant investment will support 70 flood schemes across the counties, aiming to protect 27,000 more homes and businesses over the next year.
Key projects include:
Higher Brixham: £853,000 will be allocated to replace a watercourse culvert, enhancing the protection of 70 properties.
Wotton Brook, Lympstone: £75,000 will be used to improve existing flood defences and tie the flood wall into higher ground, offering better protection for 94 properties.
Debris Screen Programme: £4.5 million will be invested to assess and upgrade 166 debris screens across Devon and Cornwall.
Other areas set to benefit from this funding include Exmouth, Bampton, and Helston, with projects addressing river flooding, coastal erosion, and surface water flooding.
Caroline Douglass from the EA emphasised that protecting communities from the devastating impact of flooding is a priority. She stated, “The delivery of the schemes in Devon and Cornwall will be welcome news for homeowners and businesses who have experienced flooding in the past and may face more extreme weather as our climate continues to change.”
For schemes not included in the 2025/26 funding, local EA teams will continue to collaborate with councils and flood groups to mitigate flood risks.
